SLIDING WINDOW

A sliding window moves horizontally along a track, with one or more sashes gliding past a fixed pane. This design is popular because it doesn’t protrude outward or inward, making it ideal for rooms facing walkways, patios, or decks where clearance is limited. Sliding windows offer easy operation—just push or pull—and provide good ventilation, though only half the opening is usable at a time. They suit contemporary homes and are often wider than they are tall, maximizing views. Modern versions feature dual-pane glass, weatherstripping, and smooth-rolling hardware for energy efficiency. The main drawbacks are that the track can collect dust and debris, and the seal isn’t as tight as a casement’s, so insulation is slightly less effective.
