A bi-fold door consists of multiple panels hinged together that fold and stack to one or both sides, creating a wide, open passage between indoor and outdoor spaces. Popular for patios, gardens, and balconies, they transform walls into nearly unobstructed openings—often 90% or more—enhancing ventilation, natural light, and flow. Modern bi-fold doors use thermal-break aluminum or wood frames, double or triple glazing, and multi-point locking systems for energy efficiency and security. They’re ideal for entertaining and making rooms feel larger. The downsides are the need for clear floor and wall space for stacked panels and a higher cost compared to standard sliding or French doors.
